Volunteer stories: Robin Cumming

It is pretty much impossible to explain what the first two weeks of life in Uluibau village have been like, but what is easy to say is that it has been absolutely amazing so far! The Fijian people are incredible, they will go out of their way to make our stay more comfortable and enjoyable, they make the experience so much easier for us.

Highlights for me so far have to include touch rugby in the evenings with the guys from the village in which us TP’ers try to persuade the Fijians to at least play something resembling rugby as opposed to their version which doesn’t appear to include the ‘no forward pass’ rule! Another highlight has to be the build project.  What is genuinely tiring and hard work is made easy by the banter and fun which we have, whether it is the Flo Rida spoof music video or hammering nails to the roof during a tropical storm! An obvious highlight would also be the food which we are cooked in gigantic amounts! Being given the chance to help with the cooking of my personal favourite of the Fijian Samosa was definitely a highlight too!

When I return to the UK I will definitely miss the call of “Kana vaka levu” at the dinner table (which means ‘eat lots’!!!).  One of the best things about my experience so far has been how obviously pleased the people in Uluibau are to have us here. They are so appreciative of what we are doing and they make it so clear to us how thankful they are which is awesome!

With just over 6 weeks left in Uluibau I know already that this will go down as a truly amazing experience!

I had the absolute time of my life with Think Pacific. Everything was just so far beyond what I could have asked for, or expected.
