Volunteering in Fiji: Week seven from Wawa village

gap year volunteering (2)

Having started the painting at the weekend, we now had eight days left on project to complete the community centre. With two coats to go on the roof and three on the inside and outside walls there was a busy few days ahead. The weather has been great for the best part of this project and week 7 was no different with the sun shining our gap year team could continue painting outside of the building and had everything except a final coat on the windows completed by Friday. They also applied the primer and began undercoating the inside of the hall. This meant by the end of the week all that was left to do was complete the outside windows and finish two coats inside, that won’t be a problem with the effort our volunteers put in and the way our team go about every day on building project.

As the last rota for school and kindi are optional only Angela chose to stay with what are now ‘her classes’ 7 & 8.  The bond she has made with these kids and the respect which they have for her is immense. It will be hard for both parties to leave each other in a few days but the impression and memories left on all their lives will no doubt stay with them forever.

Wawa Week 7 (6)

Sports coaching continued as normal this week with cricket, hockey, netball and dance. There were also a few sessions of lacrosse played with the kids and team. With rugby and netball games arranged against Ulinbau Primary on Friday extra focus was put on these sports.

Johnny and Bertie also made the 45 minute trek across to Uluibau village and school on Monday and Wednesday to try and even things up by giving their kids some coaching too. On Friday the netball was up first and it was Moturiki District School who started the stronger with five unanswered nets in the first quarter. Uluibau Primary School did manage to close the gap to 2 points in the second quarter but MDS then found their shooting range just before half time and went in at the end of the second quarter comfortably in front. The MDS girls started where they left off in the third quarter and continued to dominate for the rest of the game running out comfortable winners in the end.

It was a different story in the rugby, however, UPS boys were clearly up for this game from the off and started the game much brighter than their opponents, scoring two tries in the first ten minutes of play. MDS soon found their rhythm and got themselves on the score sheet midway through the first half although it seemed that every time they scored UPS had an answer and went down the other end of the field and scored also. This game was played at an amazing tempo from the start and didn’t let up the entire game. With both teams pulling off some of the moves taught to them by our coaches the delight on Johnny and Bertie’s face’s was clear to see. UPS finished the game the stronger with the help of a few of the MDS class 6 boys and won the game 39-24 in the end but Moturiki Island was clearly the real winner on the day as we look to continue this inter school competition and push towards next year’s tournament in Levuka, which combines both schools and in which they did so well in this year.

Evening time for the team was as busy as ever this week with a full schedule from Monday right through to Saturday. Monday night saw each of our volunteers spend some time playing cards and chatting with their families and some even had their own private grog sessions. On Tuesday it was then time for another village birthday, this time it was the turn of team leader Ronnie. As it is I who am writing this I would like to take this opportunity to thank the team and my fellow leaders for the presents and cards I received and for the greats night fun had by all, which continued until around 6am the following morning for most of us, I couldn’t have spent it with a better bunch of people. I would also like to say a massive thank you to the village of Wawa and those who turned up from neighboring villages for the unbelievable feast and cake which was presented to me on the night, they truly made it a night I will never forget for the rest of my life.

Happy Birthday Ronnie!

After such a late night everyone decided to have an early night on wednesday although a few of the team did join the villagers for a few bowls of kava before bedtime. Thursday night was bonfire night and in true style some of the village elders built in impressive fire for the team to light. After the girls had practiced the Meke (traditional Fijian dance) which they will perform at the opening of the hall everyone gathered round and cooked fresh coconuts on the fire and chatted the night away. At the request of the team Friday was again family night as our volunteers looked to spend as much time with their Fijian families as possible over the next two weeks before leaving the village.

On Saturday it was time to head across to school for their final games of netball and rugby on Moturiki. Having already had two cup games the girls were finishing off their tour with a friendly game against the Nasauvuki ladies. Both teams started on great form and exchanged points in the first quarter which was a real credit to our girls as they only had two Fijians playing for them. Nasauvuki however then drafted in some of the young MDS girls and the game swung in their favor. They did run out eventual winners but our girls weren’t too disheartened as they enjoyed the experience of playing against such talented players and everyone came together for a group photo in the end.

In the rugby the boys were up against Niubasaga who are the current holders of the Think Pacific Cup so they had all to play for. All our boys were again playing with our American representative Will making his rugby debut in the second row. Ollie however had a late fitness test on his shoulders and unfortunately was unable to play although he did run the line as touch judge for the game. Even in the blistering heat the game was played at an unbelievable pace from the first whistle and continued the whole game. The Niubasaga boys had clearly put in some preparation for this game and pulled of some impressive moves early on to get them on the score sheet first. It was then our turn to get 3 points with the help of Johnnys right boot as he kicked home a penalty. There was never any more than 3 points in it for the rest of the game and with another impressive penalty from inside our half by Johnny the game went into the last 10 minutes 10pts to 9pts in favor of the cup holders. Despite some brave attempts from Bertie, Will and Lulu in the pack we were unable to get the final score needed to win the game and so Niubasaga hold on to the TP cup.

Both teams then made the walk across to Niubasaga where another great feast was laid on and the guitars and grog were in full swing. It was a great night and just added to the party atmosphere which will carry the team through their final week in Wawa and Moturiki.

TP volunteers compete in the Moturiki Island netball and rugby games

Volunteers Fiji netball and rugby (18)

Due to some bad weather both these games were postponed on Saturday the 15th but were soon rescheduled for midweek as everyone was eager to play them. First up were our girls playing netball. Their game against Navuti was fixed for Tuesday afternoon after sports coaching. As Wawa play in the same club as Nasesara, this meant the girls would be defending the TP Cup as Nasesara are current holders. The game got off to a flying start with both teams exchanging points on a regular basis and some great end to end plays. This was a real credit to our girls as some had never played netball before and had only two Fijians in the team, B and Una. With B on top scoring form the teams went in level at the end of the first quarter. The second quarter continued were the first left off and ended with just a point separating the sides. Our team then made the brave move of taking off one of the Fijian ladies and so fielded a team of 6 of our girls. This meant Polly, Lucy, Amy, Angela, Charlotte and Leader Alice would have to work extra hard to keep themselves in the game with Sarah waiting eagerly to come on as a replacement at any time. With some excellent defending and cross field play both teams again went in at the end of the third quarter on level terms. This left all to play for in the final quarter and with Una and Sarah back on fresh the team had high hopes of a win. Again the teams exchanged scores but unfortunately Navuti just managed to edge away and were a mere 4 points ahead at the final whistle. Obviously disappointed there was an instant shout for a rematch as our girls felt with a little more training and a game together under their belts they could overturn Navuti at the next time of asking. The game will be fixed for the following week and we will be sure to keep you updated on the result.

Volunteers Fiji netball and rugby (13)

Next up on Wednesday afternoon it was the turn of the boys who were playing Nasauvuki in a challenge game before they get their shot at taking the TP Cup off Niubasaga in a few weeks. These two villages technically play together in the same club so this will give our guys a good insight for what to expect in the Cup game in a few weeks. Bertie was named captain for the day and took up his position as open side flanker with Johnny playing blindside flanker. They also had Leader Lulu playing number 8 and Leaders Ray and Ronnie took their positions in the backs, Ray playing 10 and Ronnie on the wing. It was a perfect evening for a game and a great crowd had turned out to support both sides. The game got off to a flying start but unfortunately it was Nasauvuki who got on the score sheet first with a penalty in an easy position. They also got the second score of the game and managed to squeeze through our defense for a try. Although this wasn’t converted it left our boys on the back foot from the start. This didn’t seem to faze them and after some great attacks we were soon on the score sheet too with a penalty from Johnny 15 minutes in. After that both teams managed to cancel each other out with some great defensive work for most of the rest of the half although Nasauvuki did manage to kick another penalty before the break which left our boys trailing 11 points to 3 at the break. After the restart Nasauvuki’s defense was really tested with wave after wave of attacks which soon paid off with a well deserved try. Although the conversion was missed it still left only 3 points between the sides. Johnny then kicked a further penalty but unfortunately Nasauvuki slotted home another couple of their own and edged away near the end of the game. With 10 minutes left our boys threw everything they had at them but just couldn’t manage to break through and so the game ended 21-11. It was a great first game for our boys which everyone truly enjoyed and with some big hits as is standard in Fijian rugby there are sure to be a few sore bodies in the morning. In keeping with the spirit of the game both teams then went to Navuti for dinner which was laid on by the village and a few bowls of grog and hop hop. A great night was had by everyone and some of the team partied until late into the night before walking home. Both these games have ensured that the double header in a couple of weeks is sure to be a great day for everyone involved.

Big rugby and netball games for Moturiki teams

 Netball gap year

Rugby and Netball match reports from our gap year teams in Fiji;

As rugby and netball play such a huge part in Fijian life, the whole team were really looking forward to their first taste of the respective sports this week.

First up were the girls in what started out as a close fought encounter. With Amy and Rebecca pulling on the bibs to represent TP, the rest of the team took to the sidelines to cheer them on. It was an end to end first quarter which ended 4pts each. In the second quarter however our girls found their rhythm and scored a further 7pts to Navuti’s 2. This proved to be too much of a deficit to recover from and although the third and fourth quarters were again evenly matched, the game ended 20-15 in favor of the TP girls and their new team mates. With a win under their belts, next up is a possible challenge for the TP netball cup in 2 weeks time. So for now it’s back to the training field for some preparation.

Rugby gap year

Next up was the eagerly awaited rugby match. With Niacabecabe playing in the same club as Nasavuki, this was therefore a game to defend TP rugby cup. It is widely believed these are the two best teams on Moturiki so it was no surprise a large crowd had gathered in anticipation. With 6 of the ‘Westcliff Boys’ in the starting line up there were high expectations among the TP team. Our boys started off the stronger and were unlucky not to score an early try only for some strong defending from Navuti. We did manage to get the first points on the board with a converted penalty in the 15th minute. This sadly proved to be our only score of a very physical and hard fought game. We edged our way to within 5 meters of the try line on numerous occasions in the second half but Navuti proved to be a hard nut to crack. Even the introduction of our own TP Leader Will was unable to aid the boys attempts. And so with four unconverted try’s on the board, Navuti ended the day as holders of the TP Cup.

Even in defeat our boys came off the pitch smiling after the Fijians gave a spine tingling rendition of their hymn ‘I Know The Lord’

Later it was back to Navuti, the Hop Hop capital of Moturiki, for dinner and a few bowls of grog with both teams. Next up is a challenge from Niubasaga in 2 weeks time which the boys are gunning for already.

Batiki Island Project – Sports coaching begins

sports coaching Fiji

Every day, our volunteers head up a huge programme of sports coaching for the village kids.  The sports that were chosen by our July 2011 Batiki team to focus on this week were Netball, Rugby, Rounder’s and Cricket. The aim of the project is to provide an introduction to different sports to the pupils at Batiki district school and alongside improving their skills in rugby and netball (which are national passions and pastimes for all Fijians!), to also open the children up to activities that they never had chance to experience before Think Pacific came to Batiki. A lot of our July 2011 team have strong sporting backgrounds but those who don’t also help with the others, supporting, supervising and really being that extra voice that is needed when motivating the kids. The team all did great work this week and everyone was surprised with the level of skill the pupils are demonstrating for rounders and cricket already!  Its organized chaos at times but it’s proving lots of fun for all!!

Moturiki volunteers coach Fijian champions!

Our volunteers coach the local children’s teams to glory!

 Rugby & Netball Levuka (6)

For the past two weeks the team having been busy coaching rugby and netball at Moturiki District School. This has been part of a training camp for a selected number of school pupils from Moturiki U10 U12 and U14, who were to represent Moturiki at the regional finals in Levuka.

Working side by side with teachers from both schools, our team put the kids through a pretty grueling ten days of drills, hill runs and practice matches in preparation for the big day. The winners of this competition would then go on to represent the Lomiviti Province at the national finals in Nadi. So with everyone in high spirits and with high expectations everyone headed for Levuka on Friday morning ready to shout for Moturiki.

Naicabecabe July '11 (3)

First up were the U10 boys in the rugby who started off brightly with a comfortable win, closely followed by two toughly contested games which saw Moturiki come out on top again and securing a place in the semi finals. Unfortunately this was to be their last game of the day as the just couldn’t find the space for that elusive try.

Next was the turn of our U10 girls who steamrolled the opposition in all three of their qualifying games, setting up a clash with Levuka Primary School, Moturiki’s main opponents for a number of years. Like the boys the opponents proved just to strong and having played their hearts out all day the girls lost by 2pts.

Then came the U12 boys who unfortunately won only one of their group games and so ultimately missed out on a place in the semi’s although with some strong performances they will surely be back bigger and better than ever next year.

The U12 girls followed in the footsteps of the U10’s and won convincingly in all three of their group games to set up another clash with LPS. With the crowd gathering and most of the noise coming from the TP team and chants of ‘lets go moturiki’ the netball court turned in an arena lined on all four sides with spectators. With some impressive passing and a goal shooter who seemed to be unable to miss, Moturiki were comfortable winners and moved on to the final. This was to be a much closer game with both teams exchanging points in the first three quarters. But with the help of the crowd our girls found that little something extra and claimed the last three nets to win and book themselves a place in Nadi in August.

The U14 boys found themselves up against opposition who’s size and ability was pretty much on a par with their own and so drew two of their opening three games. This was enough to book themselves a place in the semi finals much to the joy of the large crowd who had followed them from Moturiki including the TP team. With everyone in a huddle and some inspirational words from the coaches the game started well. Unfortunately the opposition proved to be too strong and our boys just couldn’t seem to find their rhythm, ultimately losing their final game of the day. Like the U12’s these boys will be back next year and surely be a force to be reckoned with.

The final game of the day was the U14 netball final in which Moturiki was again represented. Having comfortably beat their opponents in the three group games AND the semi final, the crowd, even supporters from other schools, seemed to get behind our girls and so unfolded one of the best games of netball Levuka has seen in some time. With each quarter drawing to a close with just a point or two separating the teams, the stage was set for a massive final quarter between Moturiki and LPS. The crowd truly seemed to make an extra player for the Moturiki girls and so with some excellent defending, passing and shooting another place was booked in Nadi for our girls.

This is a huge achievement for everyone involved and a great chance for the girls to truly test their ability against the best players in Fiji. Unsuprisingly everyone left Levuka on great form and chanting ‘We’re all going to Nadi’ Lets hope our girls can go one step further and become national champions!

Gap Year Sports; Fiji Rugby and Netball matches on Batiki

Our Batiki gap year project has seen some major sports contests, with our guys battling on the rugby pitch and our girls pitching their netball skills against the equally passionate Fijian women’s teams. The skill level and dedication from both our volunteers and the local villagers has been nothing but impressive and it has led to some enthralling, fast paced matches, with the whole island coming out to cheer on the games with carnival atmosphere. Here’s some of the photo highlights from the recent rugby and netball games as part of Think Pacific’s gap year expedition on Batiki Island.
