April 2013 ten week expedition begins!

Bula Fiji

Our April 2013 ten week expedition is officially underway!  Although most of the team have been arriving into Fiji over the past few days and enjoying some pre-project relaxation at Smugglers Cove resort, today the team finally all came together, as leaders Tom and Nigel met the last volunteers who arrived into Nadi Airport just a few hours ago. Our team of 22 are currently heading along the Coral Coast of Fiji’s main island. By this afternoon they will have reached their first destination, the tiny castaway island, Leleuvia.  The sun has put it’s hat on, which always promises a paradise style briefing!  Over the next few days the team will enjoy games and activities on Leleuvia and presentations by the Fijian Ministry and our leaders as they get ready to begin eight huge weeks of volunteering and traditional village life on Nairai Island.

Nairai 10-week team – Time is flying as the team hit their stride in Fiji

Gap Year Fiji (25)

Unbelievably, we are now in the last week of our fortnightly rota (and halfway through the whole project – time is flying!). The team took part in the Sunday Church service with a resounding rendition of ‘Amazing Grace’ started off with solo’s by Sarah and James and the rest of the team joining in with our soulful voices. after the first few lines with cries of ‘Vinaka’ (‘Thank you’) from the church congregation.  It was a great feeling for the team and gratefully received by the church members.

In school, Kindi and the build. Harry, Ciaran and Nick have been teaching in classes 1,2,3 and 4,5,6 and 7 and 8 respectively. The leaders and Master Poe have noticed a significant improvement in Harry’s pupils oral and written skills, so great credit to Harry there! Ciaran in 4,5,6 has been helping the kids in Year 5 mostly and they are coming along in leaps and bounds with some 1 on 1 tuition! Nick with Year 7 has been doing some excellent work in Maths, English and Social Science and even had a midweek lesson (with the assistance of Dave) on World War II. It gives the children a good understanding of the importance of the Winston Churchill speech they are learning for their House speaking.

Gap Year Fiji (14)

James, Cheryl and Gordon have been in Kindi and followed on with the Rainbow theme of last week with an Animal theme this one, with a hilarious variety of farmyard impressions blasting from the windows of Kindi (mostly from the volunteers) along with good Old MacDonald and some great farmyard games that get highly competitive – especially when there are stickers up for grabs!

Gap Year Fiji (6)

As for the build……we now have a roof! This has come in quite handy during the occasional showers!
Everyone on the build – Dave, Poppy, Sarah, Caroline, Helena, Anna, Rob, Ben, Ryan, Corrinne have been working very hard up on the roof and it’s great to see some of the more ‘apprehensive’ of the team confidently working up there now! It really is remarkable the progress made on the build over the last week or so – everyday it looks different!

Gap Year Fiji (30)

House cup this week has been House singing, with the 3 houses choosing a song to teach the children which they will then perform in a few weeks, the songs are Queen – We will rock you, Smash Mouth – All Star and Lion King – I just can’t wait to be King. They aren’t easy songs to learn but the kids pick them up so fast and after only a few days we can hear the kids reciting them loudly around village!

Gap Year Fiji (7)

It’s been a busy week of evening entertainment has been quiz night on Tuesday won by ‘3 Pinkies and a Brain’ consisting of Helena, Dave, Gordon and Nick. The Team leaders are still yet to win, even with the huge contribution of answers from Lulu Bear. We all had a great feast on Wednesday Family night, followed by a few bowls of grog, then a quiet one before Ciaran’s birthday of Friday! There was a huge communal meal in the hall where we presented his signed Fijian flag and Sulu and had a good sing song with the villagers over several obligatory bowls of grog!

Gap Year Fiji (12)

On the Saturday morning to get rid of our heavy heads we headed to Vutuna village so the team have now seen all the villages of Natauloa, they presented a sevu sevu to the village and then trekked to a stunning waterfall and had a refreshing paddle for the afternoon, though the weather was torrential rain the team all got stuck into the trek and enjoyed the views from the waterfall before heading back to vutuna village for lunch, followed by a relaxing Saturday afternoon.

Gap Year Fiji (20)

So, all in all a really enjoyable week for the team. The weeks just seem to roll by and nobody can believe we are at the halfway mark! Still 4 more weeks of hard work and fun to be had though! We should be putting up the walls and starting the flooring on the build next week and have got a trip to Levuka (the old capital city) sometime in the week to stock up on some essentials and a chance for the team to see the old saloon town of Levuka. Everyone sends their love to family and friends back in the UK!

Nairai five week team – Expedition briefing

Here are some photos of our January 2013 five week team, who started their expedition just a couple of days ago…

gap year briefing 2

After the long journey to our castaway island base, it was great for the team to finally be able to kick back and relax and get ready for all of the unique experiences which await them on Nairai Island. Gathered in a thatched hut by the beach, Think Pacific’s Project Director, Harry, and our expedition leaders, Rob and Euan, briefed the team on all aspects of their project ahead and the life that awaits them in the traditional villages.

Ratu Komai represented the Fijian Ministry and gave an inspiring presentation on the long term objectives of the project and the immediate infrastructure, youth and sports development aims, which the team shall be achieving over the coming weeks.

gap year briefing 3

We feel it’s always so vital for every volunteer group to have a personal presentation by the Fijian Government and learn all about the background to the initiatives which Think Pacific teams achieve. It’s often not until this moment when the team really appreciate just what their presence and funding means to local people and their ambitions for sustainable development, and how excited the villagers are to finally have them arriving onto their island.

Very soon, the team will be sailing across to Nairai, to meet their new Fijian friends and family and it’s time for TP’s first five week project of 2013 to make an impact! We have so much to accomplish, it’s going to be a hugely rewarding few weeks ahead!

Batiki Team – Castaway Photos

Here are the first photos from our January expedition team as they enjoy their castaway island orientation. Beautiful weather greeted our volunteers and after their four day briefing, our team have now arrived into Naigani village on Batiki Island. This is an incredible location and a very special place to call home for the next eight weeks of traditional island life. We have so much ahead to achieve, from building a community centre to inspiring the children through teaching, youth and sports projects. We look forward to all the achievements and adventures ahead!

Meg’s donations light up Waitoga primary school!

Nairai, Fiji charity donations

The Children’s Trust has kindly donated lots of games for the children of Waitoga which our current volunteer, Meg Fincham has gradually begun to introduce. The parachute has been particularly popular across all ages from kindi to class 8. The games are completely new concepts for the children and they are loving every bit! Vinaka vaka levu!

Moturiki Island – Weddings, jungle trekking, Fijian feasts and a big week on the volunteer projects!

Uluinbau Wk 2 Pics (6)

After the party filled arrival and a hectic first week how wrong were we to think that project life would begin to relax, life on the expedition has continued to get busier by the day.

Added to this week’s grog and hop hop has been the school fundraiser, an evening making bilo’s (cups from coconuts) and a trek around the island that included our second wedding in the space of 3 weeks. Making a name for ourselves as ‘THE’ best wedding crashers in TP history! All of which has taken place around our daily routine in the school, kindi and on the build. Fuelled by the advice of our families- “kana vaka levu” (eat plenty).

In school this week; Alejandra has brought a breath of fresh air to the children of class 1&2. The two Jody’s have taken to the role of teaching class 4 exceptionally and Alice has been rewarded for her enthusiasm to teach in class 7 & 8.

Before daily sports coaching we have worked for half an hour in our houses, preparing the children to go head to head in debating the effects of tourism. Judged by the teachers the first semi-final saw the blue house beat the red house, and in the second semi, yellow beat green. The house debating points will be up for grabs on finals day in our fourth week. The winner of Blue vs Yellow will decide 1st and 2nd while red vs green will settle 3rd and 4th. The topic of debate will be… school uniform.

In the fun house that is kindi; Natalie, Craig, Steph, Ella and Holly have utilised the parachute in facilitating the children’s learning through playing a range of new games.

On the build this week, we have turned to the hand tools in assembling our timber frame. Working through some challenging weather with the hammers, saws and chisels we have put ourselves well ahead of schedule.  The walling and the roof is now completed, we have ourselves a building! With that goes a special mention to Steffi who was the first up and last down from the nailing down the roofing iron.

Having spent the afternoon preparing curry, cakes and cookies we hosted a school fundraiser on Wednesday evening. In the community hall the villagers gathered to buy the food, glasses of juice and friendship bracelets- followed by a heads and tails raffle. The cake proved to be most popular in what was a cheerful evening which raised $115 to go towards stationary and learning resources for the children of Uliubau.

Soon after breakfast on Saturday morning we filled our water bottles and headed out of Uliubau on a trek of the island. Visiting eight of the nine villages we trekked along footpaths through the jungle and strolled back along the beach. Despite the odd slip and trip – albeit entertaining slips and trips – we made it to Navuti all in one piece. After a quick change into our formal Fijian dress we dropped into a wedding ceremony where we keenly accepted the offer of lunch, a cup of tea and a well-deserved rest. After our second successful wedding crashing we got ourselves back into trekking wears and made it home before dark.

Heading into our third week project life looks set to throw even more our way. With the fun day coming up on Saturday we shall begin rehearsing the Fijian warrior dance we will be performing- langa meke!
