Volunteer Stories – “The children in our house started jumping for joy” – House Cup finals reach dramatic climax at Nairai District School! by Yvonne

After spending the last 4 week teaching the children after school in photography, art, sports, singing and dancing it all came down to two days of sports and performing what we’d taught the kids. It culminated in the House Cup Final which was fittingly held in the kindi building built by last years Think Pacific team. Both houses have been working hard on all house activities this month and leading into the final House Stark had the lead over Team Cool by one point – this made for a good show for the village.

First up was house singing where Team Cool evened up the stakes with a fantastic rendition of ‘All You Need is Love’. House Stark put in a valiant effort with our version of ‘Summer Lovin’ from Grease, but it was evident that the musically trained members of the Think Pacific Team were all in Team Cool!

Suddenly the house dance became even more important in deciding who would be victorious. It was down to ‘Call Me Maybe’ for Team Cool, against the ‘Cha Cha Slide’ for House Stark. The room was tense as the results were announced and it was revealed that House Stark were the champions!

The children in our house all started jumping for joy and giving out high fives – they have really enjoyed the extra dimension to their school day this month and were proud of what they achieved together!

Nairai Team – Our volunteer apply the finishing touches to Health Clinic build project in Natauloa village!

Pic 1 - Build

With the grand opening of the Natualoa village Health Clinic just days away, this week our volunteer team were busy applying the finishing touches ready for the big day, as Philippa explains:

This week we completed the Health Clinic. Our first few days were spent touching up anything we had missed, varnishing the counters, nailing in the roof and painting on our very own logo which we had designed over the weekend. By Thursday we were very much into the finishing touches, putting in the windows and laying concrete for the steps, ready for the grand opening on Friday.”

After weeks of hard graft and commitment on the build project, and with the Health Clinic offering a key resource and facility for the community, everyone is very excited for the opening celebration!

Nairai Team – Volunteers relax with spear fishing & snorkelling fun during weekend excursions!

Pic 1 - Fishing

The weekend came around so very quickly, and so after a big week on project with build, school, kindi and sports coaching we headed out spear fishing with the Fijian men. It was a wet start to the day but soon cleared up with glorious sunshine. The water was crystal clear and we saw lots of different fish, sharks and even a turtle!

The Fijian boys were expert fisherman, and naturally a little better than us, and they caught a healthy catch of fish for us to take back with us to the village. This week everyone is very much looking forward to some night spear fishing adventures!

Volunteer Stories – Introducing Dodgeball to students at the Nairai District School during sports coaching sessions! by Ed

Pic 1 - Sport

At the beginning of the week we introduced the kids to the game of Dodgeball. We began by teaching them the basics of throwing and picking up a moving ball. We then continued to add more rules and skills such as catching, which would lead to the player who threw the ball being knocked out of the game.

The kids all developed their skills throughout the week, and at the end of the week we played a few competitive games of kids vs kids, followed by a final game of the volunteers against all of the children at once! At first the volunteers came out on top, but by the last game the kids had got the hang of the sport, and were thrashing us fair and square. All in all, it was a successful week for sport, as it was thoroughly enjoyed by both kids and volunteers!

Nairai Team – The ‘House Cup’ youth programme kicks off with ‘Under the Sea’ Arts & Crafts competition!

Pic 1 - House Cup

This week for House Cup we made our house art piece, based on the theme of ‘Under the Sea’. Our house decided to make an underwater scene. We got a cardboard box, painted it blue and then removed one of the sides of the box. Each of the children in our house then drew a fish which was hung with string from the top of the box. We collected sand and shells from the beach to make the sea floor. Once it was finished we were all really happy with it!

Nairai Team – Our volunteers learn the traditional skills of ‘bilo’ making & bracelet weaving during village night in Natauloa!

Pic 1 - Bilo & Bracelet Making

Mid-week we all got together to learn how the Fijians traditionally make bracelets and ‘bilos’ (small cup to drink kava from). The bilos are a long process of care and attention, which includes shaving the coconut both inside and outside down to the bare shell using a knife. It’s not something you can complete over night, but we all got off to a good start and it was great bonding time eating coconut while we shaved away!

The bracelets are slightly quicker to make. They are made from dried coconut leaves weaving in and out of each other using both black and yellow colours. With the help of some of the children we were able to complete the bracelets and will take them home as a lovely hand-made souvenir!
