Volunteer Stories – Stalls prove a huge hit with Natauloa community & kids during village ‘Fun Day’! by Angus

IMG_0522

On Saturday morning all the volunteers woke up early in the morning to prepare for the fundraising day. A small group of the girls baked cakes, whilst the boys went out to get bamboo for goal posts (for our penalty shootout), and the coconut shy. Once everything was set, the fun day was ready to begin.

The tombola was the biggest hit to begin with, but once all the clothes were gone, all the other stalls began to fill up. The penalty shootout was a huge hit with the young men, whereas the coconut shy and face paint where huge with the smaller kids. Volunteers, adults and children alike all had a great time and together raised $159 which will go towards putting medical supplies in the brand new Heath Clinic!

Volunteer Stories – ‘A birthday that I will never forget!’, by Ed

Ed's Birthday (7)

Friday marked my 19th birthday, and it turned out to be one that I will never forget. At lunchtime all TP volunteers, Leaders and Build Managers came to my house for a feast prepared by all of our mums. After the opening ceremony for the Health Clinic I was promptly dressed by my Na & Ta (mum and dad) into a traditional celebratory sulu accompanied by a flower garland.

I arrived at the community hall to the whole village singing happy birthday, and they had put on a huge feast of cakes and tea, also a huge birthday cake and candles! As day turned into night we returned to the hall for Kava and hop hop into the early house of the morning. It was definitely a birthday to remember!

Nairai Team – A proud day for the community of Natauloa and our volunteer team as Health Clinic is officially opened!

It was a very proud moment for the Natauloa community and our volunteer team on Nairai as the new Health Clinic building was officially opened last week. With the new facility completed the village health worker can now receive much needed resources and assistance from the Ministry of Health, and it realises a fundamental aim and ambition of the national ‘Towards  a Healthy Fiji’ initiative.

The opening ceremony proved a fantastic occassion for all, as our volunteer Philippa says:

“The whole village gathered for the opening, delivering thank and blessing the new health clinic. We all felt so proud to see it in all its glory and it was fantastic to see how excited all the villagers were. The building was officially opened by the elders and watching them and some very excited children explore the new building was really rewarding.”

Nairai Team – Kids and volunteers enjoy beach picnic to kick off the school holidays!

Pic 1. - Beach Picnic

After another big school year for the students of the Nairai District School, and with the holiday season upon us, there seemed no better way to celebrate the achievements of the kids than to head to the beach for a fun dilled day in the sunshine, as our volunteer Mae remembers:

“On Thursday it was the end of the school year picnic! All the children from school, their parents, teachers and the volunteers took boats to a nearby beach. The whole day was spent snorkelling and playing in the sea, followed by a packed lunch made by our mums. Shortly after we made a sandcastle in the shape of a volcano and then some of the children lit a fire in the centre. It was a fantastic way to celebrate the hard work of the children over the school year and all the volunteers had a great time!”

The team shall enjoy their final few days in Natauloa with the kids at their sides as they enjoy the start of their summer holidays here in Fiji, and we are sure there will be some sad farewells with the children as the team leave the shores of Nairai very soon, as they have been such a huge part of the experience!

Volunteer Stories – “The children in our house started jumping for joy” – House Cup finals reach dramatic climax at Nairai District School! by Yvonne

Pic 1 - House Cup

After spending the last 4 week teaching the children after school in photography, art, sports, singing and dancing it all came down to two days of sports and performing what we’d taught the kids. It culminated in the House Cup Final which was fittingly held in the kindi building built by last years Think Pacific team. Both houses have been working hard on all house activities this month and leading into the final House Stark had the lead over Team Cool by one point – this made for a good show for the village.

First up was house singing where Team Cool evened up the stakes with a fantastic rendition of ‘All You Need is Love’. House Stark put in a valiant effort with our version of ‘Summer Lovin’ from Grease, but it was evident that the musically trained members of the Think Pacific Team were all in Team Cool!

Suddenly the house dance became even more important in deciding who would be victorious. It was down to ‘Call Me Maybe’ for Team Cool, against the ‘Cha Cha Slide’ for House Stark. The room was tense as the results were announced and it was revealed that House Stark were the champions!

The children in our house all started jumping for joy and giving out high fives – they have really enjoyed the extra dimension to their school day this month and were proud of what they achieved together!

Nairai Team – Our volunteer apply the finishing touches to Health Clinic build project in Natauloa village!

Pic 1 - Build

With the grand opening of the Natualoa village Health Clinic just days away, this week our volunteer team were busy applying the finishing touches ready for the big day, as Philippa explains:

This week we completed the Health Clinic. Our first few days were spent touching up anything we had missed, varnishing the counters, nailing in the roof and painting on our very own logo which we had designed over the weekend. By Thursday we were very much into the finishing touches, putting in the windows and laying concrete for the steps, ready for the grand opening on Friday.”

After weeks of hard graft and commitment on the build project, and with the Health Clinic offering a key resource and facility for the community, everyone is very excited for the opening celebration!
